    NIT Silchar is the 2nd best engineering college in Northeast India after IIT Guwahati and at 9th place in all 32 NITs in India. It is in Assam which is world-famous for their ‘Tea’. Silchar is 2nd largest city of Assam & famous for their oldest culture & natural beauty apart from Tea.

HISTORY :

NIT Silchar was established in the year 1967 as Regional Engineering College under the Quality Technical Education Policy. The first batch of students were admitted in 1977 in BE program in Three branches of engineering namely

  1. Civil Engineering
  2. Mechanical Engineering
  3. Electrical Engineering 

And college started it’s academic program with affiliation from Guwahati University.The batch of BE students were awarded it’s academic degrees in the year 1982-83. Subsequently two more branches namely

  1. Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  2. Computer Science Engineering

started functioning from the year 1983 & 1987 respectively. In 28th june 2002 REC Silchar has been transformed and upgraded to National Institute of Technology Silchar with status of Demed University & made into a fully funded Central Government Autonomous institutions.

The institute has remodelled it’s curriculum and academic activities in line with that of IITs & The government of India declared the institute as an Institute of National Importance by enacting the National Institute of Technology act 2007. After that one more branch ‘Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering’ added in academics.

1.Campus & Campus life:

NIT Silchar has such a beautiful campus of 625 acr area.There are 21 lakes & lots of tree which makes campus green. The famous hangouts places of NIT Silchar includes Indie lake, Tea Garden, T-point, NIT-point, NITS Canteen, Gymkhana Park, SAC Building, Sports Auditorium, FPS, Old Gallery, New Gallery & Central Library.

Momo’s & Maggie are the favorite Snacks in all canteens of NIT Silchar.

2.Cultural Clubs :

Apart from the academics, club activities are also an area of great strength and importance of NIT Silchar. There are more than 50 clubs which provide required skill sets to the students which prepares them for the future in every domain possible. All the clubs have a structured approach for their induction and functioning.

The clubs are classified into technical and non-technical clubs and the students are free to join whichever club which interests them. Clubs ensure that the hidden abilities of the students are nurtured to the fullest.

Of all the clubs active in NIT Silchar,  the sports clubs do form a major part of them. There are clubs for all the major sports played across the nation and the facilities provided to the students for sporting events and practice makes the sports club culture even more vibrant. There are two stadiums present, one for football and the other for cricket.

Every Hall of Residence has a badminton court and common room well equipped with carrom board and table tennis facilities. There are basketball and lawn tennis courts as well in the campus.

3.College festivals :

College festivals are the best part of college life,which gives opportunities to become more familiar with Technology as well as Culture.Apart from it, it also make  connections with the campus & peoples which you meet in events.that’s moments feel you alive & give memories for whole life. Incandescence:

The annual cultural fest of NIT Silchar. It is one of the most awaited events of the college. This falls in the month of February. Students from various college from all over the country participate in this festival.

Tecnoesis is the technical festival of NIT Silchar.

This fest falls in the month of October. Here we see young and energetic minds showing their skills.

Thundermarch: performances by various metal bands from India as well as famous international bands. Previously headlined by Nale (TM’13) and Deathember (TM’14).

Posua :

POSUA is the annual celebration of RONGALI BIHU in NIT Silchar that marks the beginning of the Hindu Solar Calender Year. It is a showcase of Assamese culture and features performances such as the traditional Bihu and other cultural performances by famous Assamese personalities. It is generally held in the month of April.

           Apart from these festivals, there are also many events are organized which gives more exploration.

4.Gyansagar :

Gyansagar is a social service wing of NIT Silchar, volunteered by the students of institute which is encouraged and approved by Prof. (Dr) N.V.Deshpander, Director, NIT Silchar.

Activities Organized  :

Gyansagar aims at creating a difference in the lives of children and people of nearby villages through quality education, awareness programs and courses that brings them at par with the national level of education. The major activities are listed below

(1).Disha, The Future Path :Keeping in view that most of the students getting frustrated with choosing their wrong career option after their schooling, Gyansagar attempted to organize an event namely “DISHA: THE FUTURE PATH” just to provide the knowledge of right path for future life.

(2).Cloth Donation Camp :In this event student volunteers of Gyansagar, NIT Silchar have visited nearby poor villages like Babutilla, Bellatilla, Madhutilla,Gwala Basti, Fakeertilla, Sadhutilla, Borakhai etc. About 3000 numbers of clothes denoted by students, faculty and staff members of NIT Silchar. It is just a service to the poorest of the poor people.

(3).Celebration of Communal Harmony week :A rally is being visited to the doors of the students/faculty/staff members to collect donation to provide the financial assistance to children rendered orphan or destitute complete rehabilitation. About Rs. 10000 is being collected by the rally and has been sent to the ministry.

Apart from that student volunteers of Gyansagar have organized various competitions like art, debate and essay writing in various schools during the event. The winners in the competition have been awarded in the last day namely ‘Flag Day’ of the Harmony week.

(4).Celebration of Rangotsav:

Student volunteers enjoyed with colors and made a rally for the awareness of not use reacted/poisonous colors during Holi celebration in general. Also the slowgan was about to play the holy in open field but not at valuable floors of the hostel premises. At the end, there was a ‘Holi Dahan’ at 6th night in the presence of Director, Dean (S/W) and Head (Gyansagar).

DIGITAL LIBRARY :

Asia’s biggest digital is in NIT Silchar !! Yes, you read correctly. Named “Bharat Ratn Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Learning Resource Center” is the biggest digital library among all of it’s kind across Asia.Obviously, it is this the largest library among all IITs ,NITs & GFTIs in india.

It has been constructed on 5th Sept 2016 by chief minister of Assam Sri Sarbananda Sonwal,with the investment of  44 crore and is having carpet area of 90,000 sq ft. Former president “Dr APJ Abdul Kalam” once during his visit to the institute in 2013 expressed his wish to have a world class library here, stacked with 1 lakh books and research papers,then he promised to visit the institute once again when it will built.

The library was built but Dr Kalam’s unfortunate sudden demise could not make his second visit possible. In order to bring his memories alive the library was named after him and also a marvel statue of him was installed in front of the library.

  This library is one of the coolest place of the NIT, where you can find everything which you can except with a ideal library like books,researchpapers,magazine,newspaper, e-books,peaceful Ac hall with high speed internet connectivity,pure drinking water, Computer rooms & separate study rooms etc.

LAB FACILITIES :

There are several labs spread across the academic area of the institute and are pretty well equipped with modern facilities, be it advanced machines or the necessary lab facilities.

MEDICAL FACILITIES :

The Institute has a Health Centre with a full-time Senior Medical Officer and other qualified Medical Officers to attend the medical needs of the students, staffs and their families. The Health Centre apart from providing allopathic medicine services also offers homeopathy and dental treatment. Patients suffering from serious illness, requiring intensive care, are referred to the Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), which is about two kilometers from the campus. There is also a student”s counselor who offers counseling to the students.

The Institute has a health centre having staff as given below:

3.Nurse-cum-Midwife  – 1

All the staff and students of the Institute avail medical aid from the health centre. The Institute also has an ambulance for carrying patients to Silchar Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

HOSTEL FACILITIES

The Institute has got ten Boys hostels and three Girls hostels. During the year under review, construction of 100-bedded Married Scholar’s Hostel has been taken up. All the hostels have their individual Mess Management Committee to look after the fooding requirement for their boarders.

1.Mess Food :

Honestly, one can’t expect home-cooked food, but the mess food is decent to a certain extent providing varied meals wherein there is a greater variety of meals in the non-veg section. Almost all hostels provide really good food & Sunday night is special for us. Most of students are satisfied here. Apart from Mess & Canteen there are several other food joints & restaurant provide many kinds of vegetarian & non-vegetarian food.

2.Internet Facilities :

In all hostels internet facilities are really good.The room in the hostels are well equipped with LAN ports with high speed internet but sometimes it has been not working with that speed.

3.Drinking water, Light  & Toilets :

Every Mess & Hostel floor are well equipped with water kent which provide fresh filtered cold & normal water.Also you find common clean toilet & 24×7 current Current or light facilities.

4.Other facilities :

Every hostels has own canteen & common room which is well equipped with Tv cable facility.Keeping in mind the  sports need apart from Table tennis & Caramboad some hostel has Badminton court & a Volleyball court out on the lawn.

ACADEMICS :

The teachers here are highly qualified and experienced in their field.The curriculum is up to date,allowing students to take up various modern projects.Teacher are supportive,helpful and mentor us during our classes and projects.We also have tutorial classes which are specifically based on numerical solving.

For tutorial classes the batch is further divided into smaller segments, these classes are taken by PhD scholars. Labs are also equipped with quality instruments. The library is also well equipped with books on a variety of subjects.

Campus location & Campus Connectivity :

The campus is located at Silchar, which comes under cacher district of Assam.Actually it is in villages area( 2-3 Km from near town ) so that it is 10-11 Km & 33-34 Km away from Railway station & Airport respectively. Transportation facilities are not so good  & There is only one direct train Delhi to Silchar which is available once in a week.apart from these if you are from other state then you have to travel first guwahati & from guwahati to your destination.

There is also running buses from Silchar to Guwahati. Campus is not directly connected with the industrial area or very developed town but Overall connections are good.

PLACEMENT :

Placement of NIT Silchar is quite good & it’s improving every year. NIT Silchar gives lots of opportunities to get placed in various types of Company. Students need at least 6.5 CGPA to sitting in placement. Every year more than 100 companies visit in the campus with lots of opportunities. More than 90% students are placed every year & this year its improved but we haven’t proper Official data of 2020 batch.

Even many students are also placed which has less than 6.5 pointers. students are also get placed in off-campus. Apart from placement, some students are selected for GATE & UPSC-CSE with really good rank. Also, some students are going for higher studies. Institute also gives opportunities in a research field where many students are working on their projects/research.

After all of these NIT Silchar gives lots of memories & lesson for your life wherein HOSTEL DAYS are main.
